Founded in 1848, Proctor Academy is a college-preparatory school for 360 students in grades nine through twelve. The school enrolls 270 boarding and 90 day students. Proctor is known for academic support services, innovative experiential programs, and a commitment to environmental sustainability.

Proctor strives to maintain a positive leadership role within the local community. A community service program encourages students and faculty to volunteer in support of local agencies and schools.

Proctor’s woodlands are open to the public for recreational uses, and the school’s ski area and skating rink welcome townspeople at scheduled events, developmental programs, and celebrations. Five Proctor representatives meet periodically with five town representatives as an ad hoc liaison committee to discuss topics of mutual interest. Typically, topics include safety issues and vehicular traffic, a report of contributions to AE/MS, and plans for capital improvements to Proctor facilities. Current plans include construction of a new, sixteen-student dormitory on North Street between Mary Lowell Stone House and the football field with occupancy in December.
