Peter (Pete) L. Merzi, 81, of Greenfield passed away on August 13, 2016 at the Cheshire Medical Center in Keene surrounded by his family.
Born May 15, 1935 in Quincy, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Lino A. Merzi and Dora (Raitto) Merzi.
He grew up and attended school in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. Peter and his father operated Bridgewater Sand and Gravel Company until 1978, after which he did various types of trucking, including long-haul, and worked with construction equipment. After moving to Greenfield, Peter and his son Michael established Merzi Trucking.
Peter was in the Army National Guard for eight years, was a member of the Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Keene, and was a member of the Fellowship Lodge AF&AM in Bridgewater.
He enjoyed trucking, hunting, fishing, boating, golf, and dancing, as well as bowling and snowmobiling with his family.
Peter is survived by his wife Estelle (Roufogalis); children Michael and wife Laura of Greenfield, Steven Rigopoulos and wife Lisa of Jaffrey, Deborah Bly and husband Michael of Barnard, Vermont, Kim McKenna and husband John of Poway, California, Peter A. Merzi and wife Donna of Plymouth, Massachusetts, and Andrew Merzi and partner Coleen Vaughn of Andover; his brother James Merzi and wife Elizabeth of Taunton, Massachusetts; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on August 18 in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Brockton, Massachusetts. Interment followed in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greenfield Fire Fighter’s Association, PO Box 146, Greenfield NH 03047.
