Proctor Academy opened the doors to its new dining facility on September 11. After a year’s worth of construction, Proctor’s greenest building ever built served its first meal to the student body. The construction of the building is net zero ready, features a geothermal heating/cooling system, low and zero-VOC emitting construction materials, skylights for natural lighting, internal separate electric metering to monitor energy consumption and a transition for Proctor’s Dining Services team to all electric appliances to eliminate the use of fossil fuels since all of Proctor’s electricity is purchased through renewable energy sources.

On Friday, October 14, the greater Proctor community will celebrate the new space with a ribbon cutting ceremony honoring the generosity of those families whose generous contributions to the school made this new state of the art facility a reality. The reaction of the Proctor community to the new dining space has been incredibly positive as the bright, open eating areas on two levels provide beautiful views over Carr Field and the Proctor Ski Area. The drastically larger kitchen and serving area are a welcome change for Director of Dining Services, Barbara Major, and her team, as well.

The transition to the Dining Commons from the Cannon Dining Hall that served the Proctor community for 39 years is bittersweet, however. For thousands of alumni and faculty/staff families, the Cannon Dining Hall was an incredibly welcoming place to share meals. In time, the Proctor Dining Commons will become the same for a new generation of Proctor students, teachers, and staff members.
