Nellie Phelps Clay, 83, born on September 4, 1933, to Robert M. and Ester (Broadley) Phelps, went to her heavenly home on September 17, 2016.

She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years Kenneth A. Clay Sr.; their daughter, Kathryn Ann Gelinas; her sisters, Virginia Trevena of Port Perry, ON, Rena Larkin of Bristol; and her brothers, Robert A. Phelps of Quincy, Mass., Bernard Phelps of Epsom, and Harold (Bunk) Phelps of Plymouth.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth A. Clay Jr. and wife Tammy of Hopkinton; and her daughter, Kimberly Saucier and husband John of Pembroke; former son-in-law, Roland (Bruce) Ham of Concord; grandchildren, Jessica Hilyard, Jonathan Clay and wife Danielle; Andrew Clay; Tina Gelinas; Kyle and Nicholas Ham; step-grandchildren, Tyra Saucier and children Selena and Richard; and Joseph Saucier; great-grandchildren: Tyler, Sam and Sophia Scordo; Skylar and Aidan Clay; Niomi and Colin Jensen; various nieces, nephews, cousins, and Phelps cousins from Danbury, friends and 65+ year friends Tom and Eleanor Graham of Concord.

Nellie’s childhood home in Danbury was once a stagecoach stop.

She graduated from Andover High School in 1951 and worked for Concord Group Insurance and retired from the NH State Bureau of Disease Control. She was a member of the Retired Chapter of the SEA, DeMolay Mother’s Club, and Priscilla Chapter Order of Eastern Star. She was a recipient of the Grand Cross of Color from the Supreme Assembly of Rainbow for Girls.

Graveside services were held on September 23 at Riverdale Cemetery in Danbury, followed by a gathering at the Danbury Community Center. Bennett Funeral Home assisted the family. 

Nellie was so thankful for the excellent medical care she received this past year, but especially from Dr. Badau and the staff at the Hospice House this past week.
