February was a busy month at East Andover Village Preschool, with many discussions around family and friendship. We started off the month with appreciating our families in our second Parent Appreciation Week. Families wore their children to work with homemade buttons, enjoyed breakfast during drop-off time, and enjoyed a night of dinner and dancing. Thank you to all of our families for your support!
Our discussions and explorations revolved around the post office and mailing letters. We read Flat Stanley and made our own self-portraits to mail home. Chris Grotnes, one of our fathers, came in and explained the process of package delivery with UPS. Everyone enjoyed sharing stories of packages being delivered and opening our special package that he brought with him.
Mail has been arriving from around the state, country, and world, as we continue to explore post offices, along with an introduction to geography. We are eager to see the other letters and postcards that we will receive. Painting with bubble wrap, writing letters to other friends, and exploring stamps are some other activities that have been enjoyed as well.
The arrival of the fresh new snow brought many exciting activities to our program as well. It came inside for sensory tables and colored water fun. We used it with boiled-down maple sugar to make sugar on snow which led to excitement and observations of “it’s hardening,” “it’s sticky,” and “it’s good.” Outside on the playground, there has been snowmen making, sledding, snowball throwing, and snow building, all great fun in the winter.
When we return from our February break, we will dive into the world of fairy tales. Props and puppets will be brought in for the retelling of stories and varied versions of the same tale will allow for comparing and contrasting. There will be art experiences, science observations, and mathematics play as we explore each tale in depth. In the block area, pictures of castles and different building materials such as cardboard and brick blocks will be added to extend our thoughts and structures.
Registration for our EAVP Summer Camp with daily water play and weekly themes such as “Cruising to the Caribbean” and “Digging for Dinosaurs” has begun. We are registering for our 2013-2014 school year as well. Please contact Elizabeth Janvrin at EAVP@nulltds.net or 735-5105 for more information.
