Put Down the Phone: Encouraging Your Child to use Their Imagination Through Art!

New London NH–Exposing children to art of all kinds is important for their growth and in today’s technology driven world it is even more important. That is why Arts on Main Street, a partner with the Center for The Arts, is dedicated to bringing quality creative classes and events for kids of all ages in the Lake Sunapee Region. Their goal is to inspire kids and teens to think creatively and to express themselves through theater, dance and art. These new interactive workshops and fun spring events are all about imagination and exploration. All of these events will take place at Whipple Hall, 429 Main Street, in New London.

On Saturday, April 14, Shelly Hudson is conducting an acting workshop for kids of all ages. With over 20 years of theater experience, Shelly’s Acting 101, will use Pantomime, improv and theater games, to help students develop a clear understanding of movement and character commitment to enhance their acting skills. The first class for ages 8 to 12 runs from 10 to 11AM, the second class is from 11AM to noon and is geared toward ages 13-18. The class fee is $25. These classes are interactive.  Students are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and leave their cell phones at the door!

On Monday, April 16 kids can “Make Your Own Bird Feeder” with Alison Vernon, from 3 to 4 PM. Alison will share her creative flare with students from K through 5th grade as they make their own, one-of-a-kind bird feeder. Class fee is $15 and transportation is provided, after school, from KRES to Whipple Hall.

Kids love to make handmade, one of a kind gifts for special occasions.  Artist Alison Vernon is offering a class on May 7, from 3 to 4 PM called “Making Wind Chimes for Mother’s Day”. Geared toward grades K-5 this hands on class will have the kids make creative and unique wind chimes, a perfect for Mother’s Day. Class fee is $20 and transportation is provided, after school, from KRES to Whipple Hall.

On Saturday, May 12, a very special youth event will take place at Whipple Hall from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. A Treasure Trove of Tales,  told by Award-winning British storyteller and author Simon Brooks. Simon will enliven your ears and imagination with traditional tales of treasure. A man steals treasure found in a cave, guarded by King Arthur; a young woman battles a dragon and gets riches and her own castle; a peddler travels to London looking for treasure he had dreamed of; and a girl collects pine cones only to find treasure. These European stories will be brought before you by the masterful storyteller Simon Brooks with his voice tricks, animated characters and his bodhrán drum. You will be amazed by how many characters Simon can bring to life in your mind’s eye. Admission is $5.00 at the door.
