Bringing distinctive, diverse, and predominantly classical music concerts to the Lake Sunapee-New London region is the mission of Summer Music Associates and what a 45th season they have in store for us this year!
The esteemed Boston Civic Symphony, now in its 94th year, will return for the seventh time to New London. Francisco Noya is the orchestra’s new and very dynamic musical director. Francisco is a native of Venezuela and is a prominent figure in the Boston and New England music scene where he has earned a reputation as a versatile interpreter of symphonic and operatic literature. The program will include the Grieg Piano Concerto in A Minor featuring Andrew Li, piano soloist. As well, selections from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet and Concerto for Bass Trombone and Orchestra, written and performed by Chris Brubeck, will be featured. Yes, Chris is the son of Dave Brubeck, the world-renowned jazz pianist and composer, and Chris lives up to his legacy with ease.
The Washington Saxophone Quartet joins the roster bringing a wide variety of music from English Traditional Song to a tribute to Leonard Bernstein. The beauty of the saxophone as a classical instrument will astound you!
Anastasia Robinson, Soprano, and a local favorite, is equally at home in opera, oratorio and art song. She will perform a wide variety of folksongs written by Bela Bartok, Antonin Dvorak, Fernando Obradors, Percy Aldridge, Amy Beach, and selections from the American Musical Theater. Her golden tones and ebullient personality always charm and delight.
The award-winning Altius String Quartet is returning after a sensational concert here last summer. The Quartet had the audience on its feet at intermission! Their program will feature Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 3 in D major; Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8; and the “Death and the Maiden” String Quartet No. 14 by Franz Schubert. These musicians play as one, and to experience their performance is breathtaking.
To end the season with a twist, the Uptown Jazz Tentet, A Juilliard Alumni Jazz Orchestra, brings its ten members to New London to perform a broad and upbeat selection of classic American standards and original compositions. The group consists of three saxophones, two trumpets, two trombones, piano, acoustic bass, and drums. These musicians are some of the hottest players in New York City, and they are taking a night off from their many gigs to play for us.
