Andover High School Plans Summer Reunion

Saturday, July 6 in South Danbury

By Judy Perreault, AHS ’53

The 2013 Andover High School reunion is just around the corner; can’t believe another year has passed. I had an aunt that said “the older you get, the faster the time goes by,” and I guess she was right.

I look forward to seeing classmates from near and far. Some live right here in town and the only time I see them is at the reunion. Memories from AHS are some of the best. Children worked hard back when I was going to school. There were a lot of farms in Andover and children had to help out. Even if you weren’t on a farm you were expected to do a lot around the house, especially if both parents worked.

There was still time to enjoy yourself; there was always a group willing to get together for some fun. We didn’t have TV’s, computers, cell phones, video games, and all the organized activities of today. Going to the movies was a treat. Our fun was ice skating on the lake with a big bonfire to get warm, sledding on a snowy night, winter carnival, card games at the grange, swimming at the lake, and dances. A lot of our social life centered around the school. As I look back, life seemed a lot simpler.

Thanks to Lily Ordway and her boys we will be meeting at the Ordway Recreational Area on Walker Brook Road in South Danbury. Look for the blue and white balloons. The date is Saturday, July 6 at 10 AM. There will be a brief business meeting followed by pictures, and then our famous pot luck lunch.

The committee will provide coffee, tea, and lemonade. Don’t forget to bring your chair, pot luck, and memorabilia. We will have yearbooks and other items on display. Maybe Betty Andrews Miller Dickerman will bring the Christmas card that she made, featuring a Christmas poem that she wrote for a 1945 issue of the Blue and White Banner.

Here is a poem that Carolyn Thompson Currier wrote for the October 1950 issue of the Blue and White Banner –

That’s Pals. Like a shadow, Creeping up to me, A slap on the back, Then laughter and glee. That’s Pals. A slip of the foot, A kick in the shin, Think nothing of that, Bear it with a grin. That’s Pals. Entering a room, A scare from behind, My goodness, who’s that! No need to remind. That’s Pals. I bet today they’d consider that bullying.

As the reunion date is so close to the Fourth of July and you live a distance away, why not plan to come to both activities.

If you have any questions call 735-5493. Hope to see you on July 6.
