Candidates – Board of Selectmen: Sophie Viandier (write-in campaign)

Town News - Town Meeting - Candidates - Selectmen - ViandierI feel blessed to have grown up in this community, to have gone through its school system, and to know I will be here for many years more. There’s much about Andover that keeps me calling it home – most of all the collective ingenuity and diversity of our townspeople.

After an attempt at traditional schooling at Smith College, I returned to Andover in January 2013 and attended Yestermorrow Design/Build School in Vermont. I acquired a Sustainability Certificate and began renovating a small house in East Andover. In the process, I rediscovered the wealth of talent that exists in this town.

I am currently getting my degree online through project-based study. Exploring areas of economics, ecology, and sociology, I have learned to consider the many intricacies, strengths, and different viewpoints that make up a small community.

Last May, I had the opportunity to use this knowledge working on the Franklin Falls Project, which seeks to address economic disparities (by creating employment), social inequities (by providing multi-generational housing), and ecological damage (by improving biological diversity). The City Council has approved my design, and it is being implemented.

Last year, I directed a successful food program at the Penacook Community Center. We grew food for day cares, elderly centers, and food banks, which gave me insight into how community groups can work together.

These experiences taught me that long-standing challenges can be addressed through in-depth evaluation of current practices, collaborative efforts in creating a new vision, and meaningful action.

I intend to serve you as Selectman by listening and using an inclusive approach.
