Record Number of Vintage Snow Machines Turn Out for Highland Lake SnoFest

Andover Snowmobile Club's 12th annual gathering

By Allen Houle, Andover Snowmobile Club

On February 21, the Andover Snowmobile Club hosted its 12th annual Highland Lake SnoFest at the Andover Fish and Game Clubhouse on Channel Road in East Andover. The turnout was fantastic and provided quite a variety of machines for everyone to enjoy.

This show started out as a way for the local club, which had a few members who collected and restored early snow-traveling vehicles, to share these machines with others in the area. This year’s show did not disappoint anyone, with a record number of machines from all over New England in attendance.

This was a view of the show from the clubhouse. As you can see, it was a very colorful display, with many brands represented. All photos and captions: Allan Houle

This 1924 Ford Model T Snowmobile has been meticulously restored by Steve Rosen and is a great example of some of the first snow-traveling vehicles produced in the early years. Steve spent most of his day giving rides in this beautiful piece of equipment.

This 1973 Raider, owned by Tim Bassett, won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Vintage Sled. These Raider snowmobiles were unique, with a “sit-in” seat, rear engine, and dual tracks. Owners of these machines say they can be very comfortable and handle well. Tim’s machine was in like-new condition.

This 1964 Polaris Voyager, owned by Steve Dickinson, was awarded the People’s Choice Antique Award and is an extremely incredibly-restored machine. These machines had rear engine, four-stroke power plants, and yes, it started in -10 degree weather.

The second machine in from the end is owned by Pete Richards and is a 1970 Herters Husky and was awarded the People’s Choice Most Unique award. I have to say that is the first one I have seen in this condition, and it was very interesting to see.

Here we have a 1974 and a 1981 Skidoo Elite that are also in incredible condition. These machines are “sit-in” style with side-by-side seating and twin tracks. They were loaded with luxury items.

Another view of more machines in the lineup. Many brands were on display. With Moto Ski, Suzuki, Chaparral, Skidoo, Rupp, SnoJet, Polaris, Johnson, Ariens, Arctic Cat, Herters, Yamaha, Kawasaki, John Deere, and Raider, there was quite a variety.

Thank you, all, for bringing these machines out for everyone to enjoy. I know that your efforts were appreciated by everyone in attendance, and we look forward to the next time we can gather and share the past with the present!
