Fifty Years Ago: February 1963

Here’s some old news from the Andover, East Andover, West Andover, Potter Place, and Cilleyville “gossip” columns of the Franklin Journal Transcript, selected by Heather Makechnie.

February 7, 1963

The Andover Fish and Game Club held its meeting January 29 with good attendance. Red Pillsbury and Gerald Walker served deer burgers at the close of the meeting.

Much sympathy goes to the family of John Edgar, who passed away suddenly last week. Mr. Edgar ran the Ragged Lake Camp for Boys and will be missed greatly by the boys at camp as well as by his family.

February 14, 1963

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. William Robie (Phyllis Prentice). They were married by Rev. Herbert Kelsey on February 3. They are making their home in Plymouth.

145 Sabin oral vaccine, 20 vaccinations and +10 DPT shots were given last Thursday evening by Dr. Clark, school nurse Mrs. Klotz and Mrs. Margaret Fenton. The Andover Nursing Association helped.

The candidates for Andover High School Carnival Queen and King are: 12th graders – Carol Hill and Lee Stevens; 11th graders – Sharon Jewett and Ronald Bigelow; 10th graders – Barbara Jean Klotz and Norman Crisp; 9th graders – Carlene Longfellow and Mark Thompson.

The Andover High School varsity cheerleaders are entering the cheerleader tournament this year. The cheerleaders are Capt. Candy Griffin, Sandra Harding, Carol Hill, Norma Thisell, Linda Stewart, Sandra Nelson, and Lillian Jurta.

February 21, 1963

Proctor Academy held its annual winter carnival last weekend. Fifty-six girls from New England and as far away as Virginia invaded the campus Friday evening for a weekend of skiing, skating, and dancing.

Greeting the girls as they arrived were the dormitory snow sculptures, which their dates labored over in their spare time during the previous week. A pink and purple Valentine dance Saturday evening climaxed the weekend.

Marsha Kimball, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kimball of East Andover, with her date Jim Putnam of Keene, was selected as a member of the Queen’s Court.

Bill Stacy has entered the college of advanced science in Canaan, New Hampshire.

Neighbors and friends called on Al Hawes February 14 to help celebrate his 80th birthday. Uncle Al, as most people call him, received many cards and gifts and money. A special heart-shaped birthday cake was made by Mrs. Margaret Fenton and a bouquet of flowers was presented to him from the Ladies Aid Circle.

February 28, 1963

They talk about winter wonderland … well, we saw it on Wednesday morning, February 20, after the snowstorm Tuesday night. The trees were the most beautiful sight when the sun came up.

A Community Club meeting was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Miller in Flaghole, February 19, with Chairman Gerald Walker presiding. Secretary Jane Belanger read the minutes. Reports of the treasurer were read. Mrs. Florence Anderson was reported on sick list.

A card party was to be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Fraser of Franklin, and a 9 x 12 rug was on display and is almost done. Anyone interested in seeing the rug may see it at Mrs. William Miller’s in Flaghole.
