Gingerbread Magic Comes To WCA Barn

Press release

The Wilmot Community Association (WCA) is calling all bakers, artists, professionals and amateurs, young and young at heart, to unleash their creative spirit for the WCA’s second annual Gingerbread Showcase from noon to 3 PM on Saturday, November 17 at the Association’s Red Barn at 64 Village Road (next to the US Post Office) in Wilmot Flat.

Noon on Monday, November 12, is the deadline for entries. Contestants may set up their creations from 6 to 8 PM on Friday, November 16.

Contest categories are:

  • Adult (older than 18)
  • Teen (13 to 17)
  • Youth (3 to 12)
  • Professional
  • Groups, such as a school class, sports team, or chess club

Prizes will be gift certificates from local businesses. Recipient of the People’s Choice Award, voted on by those attending the event, will receive $100 cash.

“We are very pleased that Sotheby’s Four Seasons of New London will be sponsoring the $100 prize for the People’s Choice Award,” said Patty McGoldrick, executive director of the WCA. Winners, including the People’s Choice Award, will be announced at 3 PM on Saturday, November 17.

The gingerbread structures will be set off by a woodland wonderland.

“Your creation does not have to be a house,” said Amy Gignac, event coordinator. “Any original, three-dimensional design made out of gingerbread may be entered into the contest,” Amy added. “Although kits are not eligible for prizes, we will have a table where they may be displayed.”

Original gingerbread works will be judged by Susan Nye, local writer, instructor, well-known chef, and columnist for the InterTown Record; and Steve Potoczak, principal of New London Elementary School.

All decorations and adornments must be edible, including the frosting that holds the creation together. Creations may have battery-powered lights. Flames or electrical fixtures with cords are not permitted. Structures must be on a sturdy base that does not exceed 18 by 24 inches. Additional contest rules are available at WilmotCommunityAssoc.com.

A hearty lunch of hot pasta dishes, homemade applesauce, gingerbread, and beverages will be served. Children will have an opportunity to make a craft to take home.

Admission costs $4 for adults and $2 for children younger than 12. Admission plus lunch will cost $8 for adults and $5 for children younger than 12. The cost for admission and lunch for a family of four is $20.
