Open House at the Tucker Mountain School

Sunday, June 9

By Donna Baker-Hartwell

The Andover Historical Society will open the Tucker Mountain Schoolhouse for the season, and
host its first open house, on Sunday, June 9 from 1 to 3 PM.  The schoolhouse is located two miles from the Highland Lake Inn.  Just follow the signs from Route 11 in East Andover Village. From June through October the school is open to the public on the second Sunday of the month from 1-3 PM. There is no charge, but donations are appreciated. Other visits may be arranged by calling 735-5586.

The schoolhouse was built in 1837, and features a two-holer outhouse and wood shed attached to the classroom. After 172 years the original leather hinges on the door gave way. This spring, Brad Hartwell replaced the three hinges- using the original hand-hewed iron nails and a pair of vintage men’s boots. (The boots were donated by antique collector, Ken Reid)

Artifacts and mementos of early education will be on display during the open house.

“In my opinion, it is the best-preserved one-room schoolhouse in the state.
What a gem!” – Fritz Wetherbee, New Hampshire Chronicle
