Permaculture Gardening Workshop

Saturday, June 1, 10 to Noon

Sometimes termed lasagna gardening, sheet mulching is a no-dig method of preparing a garden bed with lots of benefits. Join Sophie Viandier, a permaculture expert from the Consult and Design Team at Garden Life, LLC in New London, NH for this gardening workshop. Following a brief presentation, we will gather for a hands-on project: building a new pollinator garden bed on the grounds of The Fells. Participants will take home a pollinator plant. Summer at The Fells: Landscape and Legacy – Famous Trees of The Fells

Join Dave Anderson of the Forest Society for a hike and trailside discussion of “Famous Trees of The Fells.” We will employ historic maps, and writings by the naturalist John Hay as we visit these great witnesses of the history of The Fells. 28th Annual Plant Sale

Saturday, June 8, 8:30 to 11:30 AM

Buy quality, well-established plants and shrubs propagated and field dug from The Fells very own gardens, as well as from the region’s finest nurseries. Also Fells signature, specialty alpine, and rock garden plants. You’ll also find unique garden art and a white elephant table overflowing with gently used clay pots and landscape tools. Tours of our Main House and gardens will be offered free of charge beginning at 8:30 AM to all shoppers. Members, bring your membership cards and save 10% on all Fells plant purchases! The Fells Main House Commences Summer Hours

Wednesday through Sunday, June 19-September 2, 10 to 4 PM

The Main House is now open 10 to 4 PM Wednesday through Sunday June 19-September 2. Discover what life was like on an early 20th century New Hampshire summer estate. See new exhibits in history, ecology and art. Take an historic guided self-guided tour of the 22-room Colonial Revival Main House, explore the renowned gardens and sculpture, build a fairy house in the children’s Fairy Village and experience the natural world on an easy hike along one of our scenic trails. Summer at The Fells: Landscape and Legacy– A Hay Family Picnic on Sunset Hill

One of the beloved events of the Hay family was to enjoy a picnic on the top of Sunset Hill. This summer, on the summer solstice, join Kitty Hay, Dave Anderson of the Forest Society and members of The Fells staff for a traditional Hay Family picnic at the top of Sunset Hill. Diplomacy: Then and Now Lecture Series – Stumping for Lincoln: John Hay’s Mission to Florida

Sunday, June 23, 11 to 12 PM

Hoping to bring Florida back into the Union in time for the 1864 election, President Lincoln sent John Hay to begin repatriating Floridians in Union-held bastions along the East Coast. Hay concluded by the time he reached Key West that reconstruction efforts in Florida were premature. Lecture Mike Pride is editor emeritus of the Concord Monitor; he is a writer, historian and a retired administrator. This event is free and open to the public. Historic Wallpaper at The Fells

Walking through the Main House at The Fells, one might be led to wonder, ”if only these walls could talk….” Well, in a way, they can! Join wallpaper specialist and designer Laura McCoy as she presents her research on the history and manufacture of wallpaper and its reproduction with a special emphasis on the wallpapers of The Fells.
