Andover Library News & Views & Book Club

By Janet Moore

Chances Galore!  Both libraries will issue one raffle ticket per visit throughout the month of September for a chance to win local prizes. The lucky winners will be eligible for gift certificates from the small-Pizza Chef, to the grand-Hannaford’s; so, get in there and give your libraries some business!

The East Andover Village Pre-School, in conjunction with the libraries, will be pushing the “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” program. If you haven’t already begun to do so, it’s time to sign up and start reading to the little ones!

The Summer Reading Program ended with a bang and a whoosh outside the Andover Library as participants built rockets that zoomed into the sky over town – the lower sky, that is, over the skateboard park. Many thanks to Priscilla Poulin and Lee Wells, who directed the program, and to Ken Wells, who directed spacecraft construction and flight. See the accompanying pictures for success and reward!

The Book Club will meet on September 25 at 7 PM at the Bachelder Library in East Andover. National Book Award finalist, “Pachinko”, by Min Jin Lee, is a powerful portrait of a young Korean woman who defies Asian society norms in the early 1900s in a move that will affect her family for generations. She spurns the wealthy and already married father of her son and relocates instead to Japan after marrying a gentle minister passing through her coastal Korean village. The history of Japan and Korea plays out over time through the eyes and actions of her extended family as Sunja struggles to lead a life of virtue and peace. Join us on the fourth Wednesday of the month for an engrossing discussion within a committed community of readers. Books are available in both libraries.
