The Wilmot Historical Society announces the completion of a project to light the flagpoles in public places in Wilmot Flat in accordance with established flag etiquette guidelines. The flagpoles at the Wilmot War Memorial, town ballpark, Wilmot Community Association and town office building now feature LED solar up-beaming lighting thanks to the efforts of Marc Davis and Brian McCarthy and his Cub Scout Pack #71.
Back in 2007 when the Veterans Memorial was restored and updated for Wilmot’s Bicentennial Celebration, LED solar lighting was not readily available. Noting that many of the flags being displayed needed attention, Wilmot resident Al Price nominated Cub Scout pack leader Brian McCarthy to be the town’s flag steward. The Wilmot Board of Selectmen approved the appointment wholeheartedly. Since then, Brian has shared flag etiquette rules and customs with pack members so that the boys and girls, kindergarten age through 5th grade, learned about them and applied them in Wilmot. During this time, the pack retired and replaced many worn flags and fixed the halyards and clips on flagpoles.
Most recently, Cub Scouts Elie and Duncan McCarthy assisted with the installation of solar LED lights a little less than halfway up town flagpoles. This positioning allows for flags to be flown at half-staff when necessary.
The Wilmot Historical Society wishes to thank all involved in satisfying the need to fly our flags appropriately and with pride.
