Though the popular band Coq au Vin rarely leaves Nantucket Island, they’ll join local music- lovers virtually on Friday, May 21, as featured performers at the Andover Community Coffeehouse. The concert will begin at 7 PM via Zoom.
The band’s tagline is “A spicy melange of global sounds, homegrown on Nantucket Island.” Since its launching last spring, it’s become the most sought-after show on the island. According to Nantucket Magazine, “Coq au Vin has taken Nantucket by storm with an eclectic repertoire that includes everything from Django-style gypsy jazz, Eastern European and Russian folk music to French chansons, Cuban songs, American blues – and a little bit of pop.”
The local connection is Coq au Vin’s bandleader and accordion player, Caleb Cressman, who graduated from Proctor Academy. While living in Andover, he also studied African drumming with Andover resident Grace Schust. Cressman has since returned to Nantucket, where in addition to being an organic farmer he composes all of the original music that Coq au Vin performs. Those wishing to attend the event should contact TheAndoverHub@nullgmail.com to request the Zoom link. The evening is free, although audience members will have the opportunity to make a donation to Coq au Vin’s electronic account.
The May concert will also include several “Open Mic” performers participating from their own homes. Local musicians wishing to request a chance to play a song or two can also contact TheAndoverHub@nullgmail.com for more information.
The Coffeehouse operates under the umbrella of the Andover Community Hub. For more information about the Hub or the Coffeehouse, follow the Andover Community Hub and the Andover Community Coffeehouse Facebook pages.
