South Danbury Church News for November 2022

Donald Hall short story to be presented in December

By Linda Wilson

Thank you to everyone for your support and participation in South Danbury Church events and activities! We hope that everyone who attended our Happy Hour and Homemade Pie Sale in October enjoyed it as much as we did.

We are also especially grateful for your donations to the “South Danbury Church Essential Home Goods Shelf” at the Danbury Community Center. The (non-food) home goods collection began this year with a suggestion from Rev. Gail Kinney, and thanks to Kendra Braley, the DCC is hosting it. Personal care items are especially helpful. Contributions are always welcome, and can be brought to the DCC or to church services and events.

Looking ahead, on the evening of Tuesday, December 13, the South Danbury Church and At Eagle Pond, Inc. (the nonprofit preserving the Wilmot farm where poets Donald Hall and Jane Kenyon shared a writing life) will present Pontine Theatre of Portsmouth (Pontine.org) in their adaptation of Don’s short story, “Christmas Snow.” Staged for a small audience, this dramatized reading features hand-drawn props but has no conventional actors.

The story is a fictional remembering of Christmas at Eagle Pond Farm in 1938, the year that Don was 10. Though he spent summers there with his grandparents when he was growing up in Connecticut, he was never actually at the farm at Christmas. This story allowed him to have that near-mythic experience he had so wanted.

The performance, for adults and older children, is at 7 PM at the church in South Danbury. There is no charge to attend, but reservations are recommended because seating is limited. Contact At.Eagle.Pond@nullgmail.com to register.
