Learn how to plan and plant a pollinator-friendly garden at 1:30 PM on Sunday, March 26 at the Wilmot Community Association’s (WCA) Red Barn, 64 Village Road in Wilmot. This free program is sponsored by the WCA and the Wilmot Garden Club.
Suzanne Paul, owner of Wilmot-based Terra Niche, will discuss how homeowners can add diversity to their landscapes by introducing beautiful native perennials – flowers, grasses, and sedges that also support pollinators.
Terra Niche is an all-organic gardening company specializing in naturalized landscapes and soil ecology. Paul, who in June will install a pollinator garden in the Red Barn’s front yard, will illustrate her program with photographs of many of her favorite plants. The WCA’s pollinator garden is funded in part with a gift from the Wilmot Garden Club.
Paul’s approach to gardening extends well beyond planting and maintaining traditional landscapes. She strives to create the healthiest habitats possible starting with the soil, what she considers the foundation for growing healthy plants.
She is a Northeast Organic Farming Association Organic Land Care Professional and a master pruner.
Most recently Paul has been planting naturalized landscapes, converting lawns into meadows, interplanting septic fields with wildflowers, and re-wilding traditional landscape plantings. “One of my primary goals is to supply native insect and bird populations with appropriate food resources,” Paul said. “Improving the function of each parcel of land by taking these steps contributes to the environment.”
Refreshments will be provided by members of the Wilmot Garden Club, a nonprofit organization that maintains Wilmot town gardens, organizes an annual plant sale held on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, makes and hangs holiday greens, awards an annual scholarship, and schedules educational field trips. Members also share their knowledge and love of gardening with the community.
The WCA, founded in 1963, is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The nonprofit organization offers free and low-cost events throughout the year. The WCA owns and operates two facilities in Wilmot – the Red Barn, a community center on Village Road, and Timmy Patten Park, a beach and playground on Shindagan Road.
