Andover art lovers are busily engaged in carrying out plans for a major art exhibit to be held July 4 and July 6 on the lawn of Proctor Academy. Residents have undertaken a project this vast in scope because, “The sharing of one’s efforts is a necessary part of the progress of creating,” according to Mrs. Benjamin Grant, General Chairman of the art show.

A regular meeting of Ladies Aid was held at the home of Miss Anna Roberts, June 13, with 17 adults and one child present. After the meeting a surprise party was given to Mrs. Daisy Eastman, who was 90 years young on Thursday. A birthday cake made by Anna Roberts was cut and served by Aunt Daisy, and Mrs. Eunice Mason made a corsage of daisies.

The most modern system of mail distribution and delivery in existence; that’s the aim of the ZIP Code, a brand-new system to be put into effect by the Post Office Department nationally, come next Monday, June 1. “ZIP” stands for “zoning improvement program” and each separate community post office will have its own ZIP Code number. Currently the address on a piece of mail must often be read as many as eight or ten times by postal employees to get it to the proper destination. Each handling slows the process of mail dispatch and adds to the opportunity for human error. With ZIP Code, a clerk needs only to glance at the code to know immediately to what national area, state, and post office the letter is destined, and to speed it on its way, cutting up to 24 hours off the time between deposit and delivery.

Services were held Tuesday for Mrs. Belle E. French, 81, who died Sunday, June 23, at the Sceva Speare Memorial Hospital, Plymouth, after a long illness. Mrs. French was born March 17, 1882, the daughter of Arthur B. and Susie E. (Boyd) Woodward, in Wentworth. She had resided in East Andover for 45 years, and prior to that in Franklin. Mrs. French, and her late husband Byron, operated a summer boarding house in East Andover for 20 years at the Hillside Farm.
