Peter Kimball Smyrl – May 9, 2023

He taught mathematics at Manchester’s Hillside Junior High from 1968-1975 when he then became the Assistant Principal at Derry’s Hood Middle School. In 1981 he was named principal of the Floyd and the Grinnell Schools. 1986 was the highlight of Peter’s educational career when he opened the new East Derry Memorial Elementary School. He was able to hire his own staff of teachers, selecting only “The Best”! His priority was always the students, to give them the best education possible. He loved hosting parties for his staff and fellow principals at his home in Candia. He retired in 1998. Peter was famous for his quick wit, practical jokes and ‘one liners’.

Peter loved working with wood including designing and building the home in Candia that he shared with his wife for 45 years, and in which his children were raised. Spending time with his family at his parents’ home on Lake Winnipesaukee brought much joy. Of course, his two children and two grandchildren were the source of much pride. He encouraged and supported them in all their various sports and activities. He was a member of the New Hampshire Retired Educators Association and previously had been on the Board of Directors of the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire with his father for many years.

Peter is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years Dayle Rojek Smyrl, son Eric Smyrl and wife Tammy of Manchester, daughter Lauren Smyrl Koron and husband John of Andover; two grandchildren Victoria and Connor Koron; two brothers Jon Smyrl and wife Judith of Vero Beach, Florida, and Charles Smyrl and wife Wendy of Bedford, New Hampshire; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
