People - Deaths - 131104 NowellHoward Carroll “Howie” Nowell Jr., 83, of Concord passed away unexpectedly on November 4, 2013. Howard was born in Franklin on February 7, 1930, the son of Howard Carroll “Buster” Nowell Sr. and Laura (Worden) Nowell. He graduated from Franklin High School, Class of ’48, and enlisted in the US Navy, proudly serving his country from 1949 through 1953. He was a Korean War Veteran.

Following his time in the service, Howard attended UNH, graduating in 1959. He worked for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department for 34 years, first as a Fisheries Biologist and then as Chief of Game and Management Research, eventually retiring in 1992. He was active in the East Concord Community Lamp Lighters Programs and spent many years with the Boy Scouts Pack and Troop 90. He was a member of the Horace Chase Lodge for 44 years and the American Legion Post 0088.

Howard is survived by his wife of 55 years, his best friend and his world, Marie (Stevens) Nowell. Among other family members he leaves behind are brother Clayton Nowell of Wilmot and sister-in-law Bernice Nowell of West Andover. He was predeceased by his brothers John and Willis Nowell.

A memorial service was held on November 8 at the West Congregational Church in Concord, with inurnment following at the New Hampshire State Veteran Cemetery in Boscawen.
