In December 1984, Ann was killed at age 34 in an automobile accident. In September 1992, Susan died at 67 of cancer, and in February 1999, Elizabeth (Landers) died of cancer at 51.

In June 1995, David married Lorna T. Johnson of Andover, and they enjoyed 15 years together until she passed away in 2010. In 2011, David moved to Tucson to be close to his daughter, Martha.

In addition to Martha and her husband Joseph, he is survived by three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren; his step-children Ellen (Rich) Pine of Powder Springs, Georgia; Stephen (Neall) Johnson of Wilmot; and Bryan (Paula) Johnson of East Andover.
