How do I write an article on the eighth grade class going to New York for what will be the last celebration of them as a group? I went to AE/MS one morning to talk to the students, and as I looked at them sitting in their desks I thought, “These cannot be the group of children going to New York City without their parents!”
Before me sat 18 young adults who, only 10 years ago, were my very first preschool class. More than half of the eighth graders went together to the little school on the hill with Ms. Doreen, Ms. Becky, and myself. I can remember them so small like it was yesterday, and now after being a group for many years, they will begin a new journey that requires them to go in different directions. This group will be attending different schools, meeting different friends, joining new clubs and new school environments.
It is all very exciting, and how better to send them off then with a trip, a celebration, a time full of laughter and memories to last them a lifetime!
The eighth grade class will be traveling to New York City to visit The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. They may visit other attractions as well, depending on funds. They will finish the trip with a visit to the Six Flags Park in Agawam, Massachusetts.
The money for this trip is raised by the students, parents, and staff. The students and parents have decided to have a fun community prize bingo night to help raise the funds. When I asked the students who would help, every one of them said they would. They had ideas to help create the event, and many of them show much excitement to make it happen.
The Eighth Grade Community Bingo Night will take place on Saturday, May 17, at 5 PM in the AE/MS gym. There will be hot dogs, popcorn, drinks, and baked goods to buy.
Everyone is invited! There will be babysitting for younger children. They will have their own bingo games and prizes.
Also at the event the student will be duct taping Mr. Tucker to the wall. Pay for a strip of duct tape, and let’s get him hanging on the wall!
I spent the morning with our eighth graders and asked them what they were looking forward to about the trip, and here is what they said:
“I’ve never been to the city part of New York or stayed in a hotel,” Bret said.
“I’m looking forward to seeing 9/11 ground zero and seeing it with my friends,” Tiffany said.
“I’m looking forward to the focus being on us, meaning the small group of eighth graders at AE/MS rather than the whole school of AE/MS,” Noah said.
“I’ve traveled a lot, but I am looking forward to traveling with my friends instead of my family,” Scout said.
“I’m looking forward to the time with my friends,” Alex said.
Finn’s thoughts on Mr. Tucker being duct taped to the wall: “He should have to wear footed pajamas.”
Come enjoy our community Bingo night! Support our students in their efforts, and let us all celebrate, love, and come together to raise money for their last time together.
