At 90, Frank Haley Continues Raising Funds for the Blind

Top fundraiser for annual walk for nine years

By Lauretta Phillips, for the Beacon

Once again, 90-year-old Frank Haley is making his plans to attend the annual 3K Walk for Sight hosted by the New Hampshire Association for the Blind (NHAB). The 11th annual walk takes place this year on Saturday, June 7.

The Blind Awareness Walk-a-thon has been produced each year for the past 10 years by NHAB, which provides vision rehabilitation services for New Hampshire people of all ages who, like Frank, are blind or visually impaired.

On June 2, 2013, NHAB hosted the 3K Walk for Sight despite heavy rains. Among the hundreds that turned out in support of the Association’s 100th anniversary were Frank, his wife Ann, and some of their granddaughters and daughters-in-law.

Armed with umbrellas and ponchos, walkers journeyed to the Statehouse and back to the Association for the celebratory announcements and catered lunch by Tandy’s Restaurant of Concord, where Frank was awarded his ninth trophy for being the top individual fundraiser for the event.

This year, Frank has every intention of earning his 10th trophy. It isn’t about the trophy, but about all the good that your donations to NHAB do for the people they serve.

Some of the services provided by NHAB are rehabilitation therapy, which helps an individual maintain his or her independence; orientation and mobility instruction, to help an individual develop safe, independent travel skills and learn new routes and environments; and low vision services, which assist people who are partially sighted to use their remaining vision more effectively. NHAB also provides educational services, adaptive technology service, volunteer services, and public education.
