Recreation Committee Minutes, January 14, 2014

Condensed from approved minutes

Present: Tom Frantz, Ellie George, Howard George, Alan Hanscom, Tim Norris, and Brian Reynolds

Background checks for basketball and skiing: It was decided to check coaching lists against the list of those who have had background checks.

Andover Communication Protocol: Forms for relaying complaints were reviewed and distribution discussed. The white copy is for the individual making a complaint, the yellow copy is for the Recreation Committee member receiving the complaint, and the pink copy is for the Town Administrator. These forms are also for anything out of the ordinary such as an injury, altercation, or incident.

Winter Programs

Ski Program: The ski program is now up to 132 kids and going smoothly. Fifteen of the 20 chaperones have completed background checks under the supervision of Alan Hanscom and Ellie George.

Basketball: Background checks will be taken care of by Tom Frantz. Thirteen boys were playing fifth and sixth grade basketball and almost won their championship.

Eleven fifth and sixth grade girls are almost all new to basketball and mostly fifth graders, so the future is promising.

There are thirteen third and fourth grade boys, including some second graders who moved up.

There are nine third and fourth grade girls, including several second graders who have moved up.

For the first time in awhile, the first and second graders are having regular practices.

Emily Furtkamp reports that it is important to:

  • sign up for court time in the spring
  • generate a pool of refs if possible
  • have refs wear referee shirts and black sweat pants if possible

Possible Baseball Field Policy

Spring: Restore the infield to good condition with jock mix and provide new bases. Check and fix fences.

Fall: Sod cutter is used to renew base paths and infield mix added where needed. Check and fix fences. Put away batting cage in building.

Ways to pay for it:

  • Leave it all to Baseball
  • Rec Committee provides materials
  • Rec Committee does it all, and Baseball helps defray the cost

Possible Rec Building Policy

Tom Frantz will check with Dunbarton for their rec building policy. Alan Hanscom will do the same with Loudon and Warner.
