Mulching for Weed Prevention
Wednesday, May 28, 6:30 to 8 PM
Boscawen Community Gardens, first right on Corn Hill Road, Boscawen

Mulching is a great way to keep weeds under control in your vegetable garden, and it has the added benefits of conserving soil moisture, reducing erosion, and reducing some pest and disease problems. Lots of materials can be used as mulch in the garden.

Amy Papineau, UNH Cooperative Extension Field Specialist, will discuss the many mulching options and will show how to use them effectively. This talk is free and open to the public. Please register by contacting the Boscawen Agricultural Commission at 753-9188 x301 or Agriculture03303@nullgmail.com.

Emerald Ash Borer for Birders Workshop
Thursday, June 26, 6:30 to 8:30 PM
Susan N. McLane Audubon Center, Silk Farm Road, Concord

Emerald Ash Borer has been labeled the most destructive forest pest in North America and has killed ever-widening swaths of ash trees in the Northeast since the late 1990s. Forest Health officials need your help in finding where potentially infested trees are in our area.

Field Specialist with UNH Cooperative Extension Amy Papineau will help you learn how to identify ash trees in the forest and landscape. Forest Health Technician with the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands Molly Heuss will talk about the biology of the Emerald Ash Borer and show examples of infestation symptoms.

We will then explore forests around the McLane Audubon Center to look at potential infested trees so you can practice your observation skills and learn how managers are trying to control and reduce infestations. New Hampshire Audubon’s Director of Land Management Phil Brown will lead the search for bird activity and talk about the strategy for dealing with destructive pests on New Hampshire Audubon lands.

Bring binoculars and a drink, and dress for the weather and insects. For more information or to RSVP, contact Phil Brown at PBrown@nullNHaudubon.org or call  224-9909 x334. Co-sponsored by NH Audubon and UNH Cooperative Extension.

July 2014

What Makes a Tick … Tick?
Monday, July 7, 6:30 to 8 PM
Boscawen Municipal Complex, 116 North Main Street, 4th Floor, Boscawen

Alan Eaton, UNH Cooperative Extension, Professor/Specialist, Entomology, has been studying ticks and Lyme disease in New Hampshire for two decades and lectures all over the state. He said forecasting tick activity is a bit like forecasting the weather. Nonetheless, he sheds light on what makes ticks, well, tick.

Bring him your bug questions, as he is also an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) expert. This talk is free and open to the public. Please register by contacting the Boscawen Agricultural Commission at 753-9188 x301 or Agriculture03303@nullgmail.com.
