June marriages and a new principal

Here’s some old news from the Andover, East Andover, West Andover, Potter Place, and Cilleyville “gossip” columns of the Franklin Journal Transcript, selected by Heather Makechnie. 

July 2

United in marriage on June 27 were Miss Norma Jean Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Brown of West Franklin, and Roger Guy Laro, son of Mr and Mrs Guy F. Laro of Franklin. Miss Laro is a 1964 graduate of Franklin High School. Mr. Laro is employed by the State of New Hampshire as a groundsman in Gerrish.

Miss Marion Elizabeth Blake, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Blake of Andover, became the bride of George Alan Clough, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Clough of Laconia on Saturday, June 27, in the Proctor Academy Chapel. Miss Clough is a graduate of New London High School ’64 and is employed by Champagnes in Franklin. Mr. Clough attended Laconia schools and served three years in the armed services. He is employed by WP Titus of Laconia.

Miss Mary J. Hersey, 90, formerly of East Andover, died on July 2 in Altadena, California, where she and her sister, Edith S. Hersey, resided for 40 years. She was born in Andover on February 20, 1874, the daughter of Frank and Ellen (Rowe) Hersey. She lived in the Tucker Mountain area of East Andover for many years.

Mary was a lifelong teacher, having started her career at the one-room schoolhouse on Tucker Mountain, and then at Pasadena Polytechnic School for 25 years. Miss Hersey was a member of the Pasadena Historical Society and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union.

Dennis Fenton has been working in Orono and Presque Isle, Maine at the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service office and will be four additional weeks in Ellsworth, Maine, as acting office manager.

July 9

Andover won the ball game with Laconia on the Fourth of July with a score of 7 to 2. Nicky Hamp made two home runs, and it was a pleasure to have Dale McLeod back on the team!

A daughter, Virginia Louise Shaw, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Shaw on July 1. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces. Congratulations to the Shaws.

Congratulations go to Mr. and Mrs Leon Bedard. on the birth of a daughter on June 2.

July 16

The Andover Town Baseball Team sponsored a Donkey Ball game in Carr Field on Friday evening with a good many people having a good laugh. The game was played between Andover Firemen and East Andover Firemen, which ended 9-9. They took in $170, forty percent of which gave them a profit of $68.10.

East Andover Firemen were Ronnie Brouthers, Steve Gulick, Roger and Earl Kidder, Charles and Paul Barton, John Lugtig, Dale McLeod, Ronnie Bigelow, and Steve Barton. Those on the Andover side were Howard and Carl George, Chester and Peter Shampney, Eddie Taylor, Jimmie Alley, Clyde Currier, Bob Hutchington, Murray Smith, Arthur Fortain, Charles Morrill, Steve Smith, Peter Keyser, and Bobby Currier.

Showing at the Regal Theatre in Franklin this week is Beach Blanket Bingo. Next week is Jerry Lewis in The Patsy. All persons showing proof that their name is Pat, Patricia, or Patsy will be admitted free of charge to this show. (Must show birth certificate or drivers license.)

July 23

The Andover Community Service Club held an all-day cancer sewing at the home of Mrs. Clara Jones, with eight members present. Many needed cancer dressings were made.

Kenneth Sanborn has opened his new garage on Routes 4A and 11. We wish Kenneth lots of success.

Due to the resignation of Perley Henderson Jr. as principal of the Andover Elementary School, Raymond S. Burton, 23 and unmarried, will assume his duties in Andover in September.

Mr. Burton graduated Woodsville High School in 1958, graduated in 1962 from Plymouth State College with a Bachelor of Education degree, majored in Social Science, was active in student organizations, and served as president of the State Student Education Association. Mr. Burton received the Guy Edwin Speare Award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Education.

He has already completed two years as principal of the elementary school in Warren, New Hampshire. He is presently taking courses at Plymouth State College which will lead to a master’s degree. He is serving as a part-time aide to Congressman James Cleveland.
