Colby-Sawyer College Hosts Fall Dance Ensemble “Fifth Position”

Friday, December 12, at 7 PM

Press release

Colby-Sawyer’s Fine and Performing Arts Department will present the fall dance ensemble “Fifth Position” on Friday, December 12, at 7 PM in the Sawyer Center Theater. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and children, and free with a Colby-Sawyer ID. Tickets are available at colby-sawyer.edu/tickets or through the Sawyer Center Box Office at 526-3670 and boxoffice@nullcolby-sawyer.edu.

Under the artistic direction of adjunct faculty member, Laura Dunlop Shepherd, the two-act evening of dance features original choreography in genres including ballet, jazz, contemporary, modern, hip hop and classical Chinese. “The performance [will] bring the college and greater communities together under one roof to celebrate dance and the young people who call New London home while they are students at Colby-Sawyer,” she said.

Professor Shepherd praised the hard work of her Dance Repertory and Performance students in making “Fifth Position” possible. “[The students] have worked tirelessly not only to choreograph and perform pieces that showcase beautiful technique and ability, but an advanced level of artistry and creativity as well,” she said. “Each student brings to this performance a passion for and dedication to dance, as well as a desire to take each audience member on an artistic journey of reflection and imagination.”

About the Artistic Director

Professor Shepherd holds a B.A. in theater and dance from Smith College. After years of performing in summer stock and professional musical theater, and then in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring the Rockettes as a singer and dancer, her focus turned to sharing the performing arts that have so enriched her life with others through teaching.
