A Proctor student group led by head athletic trainer Chris Young will host Proctor’s second annual St. Baldrick’s Day event on Saturday, March 28. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers. The foundation is known for its head-shaving events, where volunteers shave their heads bald to stand in solidarity with children fighting cancer and to raise money to support childhood cancer research.
Last year Proctor hosted an event and raised $30,272 from 70 “shavees” which included eight teams of shavees joining together for a great cause. We had 16 amazing barbers and hair stylists enjoying coloring, shaving shapes, and getting all the shavees bald.
Last year we honored two area children who have been battling cancer: Adrianna Riggot from Newport, diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on June 19, 2013, and Aybel Martin from Goffstown, diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia on April 5, 2013. As part of the event we also hosted a Be The Match bone marrow drive and were able to get 19 participants who donated to become a match.
We hope this year that we surpass the amount raised last year and bring in more people to the bone marrow drive.
This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, March 28, from 3 to 5 PM at Proctor Academy Fieldhouse, 12 Fieldhouse Lane, in Andover. It will be a family-friendly event with games and fun activities for children and for adults.
