Amy Lyon will present “Got Grit?” from 6 to 7:30 PM on Thursday, March 19, at the Wilmot Community Association’s (WCA) Red Barn at 64 Village Road in Wilmot.
Amy, a fifth-grade teacher at Sutton Central School, recently received her doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from New England College. While researching her dissertation, she specifically studied ways to foster qualities of grit in the classroom.
“Grit is passion and perseverance for long-term goals and what some believe is a key ingredient to success,” Amy said. “Being able to set goals, work towards them while facing adversity, and being resilient are skills students need to succeed.
“Optimism and self-control are also key components to promoting grit,” Amy said. “This skill set can be fostered, especially in children from age nine through 18. Come learn some practical strategies to help kids become grittier!”
Amy, who also teaches literacy at Colby-Sawyer College, is a member of the University of Pennsylvania Character Lab team, led by Angela Duckworth, to assist with a grant designed to create ways to introduce grit to inner city students in Baltimore.
“The WCA is pleased to host Amy Lyon’s presentation,” said Ann Davis, president of the association. “We’re always eager to host local experts who want to discuss topics they love. Parents who attend Amy’s program will quickly learn that she’s passionate about and dedicated to guiding her students along life’s gritty path.”
Refreshments will be served. More information is available at 526-7934, at WilmotCommunityAssocation.org, or follow us on Facebook.
