The 118th Hersey Family Reunion Held on August 1

A beautiful day on Newfound Lake for all

By Rita Norander, for the Beacon

Although cloudy skies began the day, the sun slowly appeared, and it became quite pleasant for the 118th annual reunion of the descendants of Hannah and Gilman Hersey. Helen LaPlante Duchesne’s Newfound Lake home was once again the gathering place for the group.

Forty-six members and two guests were in attendance, representing the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and California. Traveling the greatest distance was Lori Hersey, her husband Tom Giesler, and their sons Owen and Aaron from Berkeley, California, who were vacationing at their East Andover farm. The oldest member present was Helen Duchesne, age 86, while her great-granddaughter Ja’Liyah Brown, age two, was the youngest.

The traditional pot luck dinner was once again eagerly anticipated by all, and no one was disappointed! The meal was followed by the business meeting which was called to order by President Paul Hersey. A moment of silence was held for all deceased members of the Hersey family, and especially for Ray Hersey, Wayne Elliott, and Steve Colby, who died this past year.

Secretary Rita Norander gave a brief review of last year’s reunion, and Lucy Hersey Twombly gave the treasurer’s report. The secretary shared news she had received from members who were unable to attend. Each one sent wishes for a beautiful day, a big turnout, a fun time, and everyone said they would be thinking of us on reunion day.

Officers elected to serve another term were President Paul Hersey, Vice President Chris Duchesne, Secretary Rita Norander, and Treasurer Lucy Hersey Twombly. The drawing of the door prizes was lots of fun, and there were many lucky winners.

Fishing seemed to be the big attraction for the children this year, and of course swimming. Also enjoyed were paddle boat rides, match-box cars, board games, and Kan Jam (a frisbee game) by the young adults. Everyone enjoyed visiting and catching up on family news.

Next year’s reunion will again be held at Helen Duchesne’s at Newfound Lake on August 6, 2016. Lori and Tom have offered to host the 120th reunion the following year on August 5, 2017 at the Guy and Nannie Hersey Farm in East Andover.
