August 24 marked the beginning of the school year and the return of students new and old to East Andover Village Preschool (EAVP).
Many projects were completed during the summer months. Clean paint has freshened some of the spaces; cubbies and hooks are labelled with names; and books and materials are on the shelves waiting for play.
Our enrollment is changing as this article being written, with additional families joining us almost daily. We average 15 children each day for the half-day program and nine for the full-day.
Flowers, trees, and vegetables have been growing during the spring and summer in our playground/garden and now offer their bounty. In June, students planted sunflower seeds with a wish for the future. Some of those students are returning to see their wishes in full bloom.
New and old students will gather the squash, tomatoes, or blueberries and turn them into delicious food to eat. EAVP Director Amy Rheume and I are excited about the many other discoveries they will make as they gather the herbs from the scent garden or watch butterflies and other insects visit the space, too. The playground/garden will be an invaluable extension of our classrooms.
In the early weeks of the year we are creating a sense of place for the children, teachers, and families. We are getting to know each other or getting reacquainted. Amy and I will be setting out all sorts of “invitations”or “provocations” that will bring us together to wonder, observe, manipulate, and engage.
Monarch caterpillars will perform their amazing transformation in our science center, while paint and some of our sunflowers will inspire colorful imaginings in the art area. I am interested in finding out what happens in the block and dramatic play areas. Questions and ideas will emerge out of this play with each other and the world.
In this way our curriculum will unfold over time, not unlike the monarch, as it moves through its many stages. Friendships will be forming as we learn to share materials, spaces, and ideas. Predictable routines and developing self-help skills will enable us to feel secure and grounded in school over time, and the learning will occur naturally.
Amy and I wish to encourage families to feel welcome and engaged in the school and with each other. EAVP is governed by a Parent Board. Please consider taking part. We are interested in your questions, comments, and talents. We also look forward to getting out into our community on field trips as well as inviting community members to the school.
