On January 11, 36 AE/MS students in grades four through eight participated in the school-level 2013 Scripps Spelling Bee. This year’s bee was full of challenging words such as whiskery, provincial, and subsequent. A previous champion, Noah Berry, was given the word sporadic. Ever the comedian, he spelled it as B-A-N-G, leaving the competition with a bang! Extant is pronounced EK-stant and is defined as “currently or actually in existence.” This year’s runner up and alternate was seventh grader Luke Weber. Annika will now participate in the state spelling bee in Concord on March 2. Good luck, Annika! Caption: Amanda Lauster. Photo: Jane Slayton
