At the end of the year, the Board of Selectmen adopted a new winter maintenance policy and three ordinances to help clarify public responsibilities, improve resident and personnel safety, and prevent damage to snow removal equipment.
The first ordinance states that residents may not shovel, snow blow, or plow snow into or across public roads. The second ordinance states that no vehicle may be parked in the Town’s right-of-way from the beginning of a storm to 48 hours after the storm has ended. During this time, the Town holds the right to tow inappropriately parked vehicles at the owner’s expense. The Town is not responsible for any damages sustained by the vehicle when illegally parked.
The third ordinance states that the Town will not be liable for damage by snow removal equipment to any objects placed within the Town right-of-way. (The Town right-of-way extends approximately 15 feet in each direction from the center of the road.) Mail boxes, fences, stonewalls, lawns, or any other items should be placed outside of this zone to avoid damage from snowplow wings.
Violation of any of these ordinances may result in a fine of up to $100 per incident.
