ANDOVER ELEMENTARY MIDDLE SCHOOL
Congratulations Cedar Kiedaisch! Not only did Cedar win the AEMS Geography Bee but she has now qualified to compete in the state level competition of the National Geography Bee. That is quite an accomplishment! One champion from each state will advance to the national competition which will be held at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Our emergency notification system, One Call Now, reaches all our families through email and phone. If you wish to receive AEMS emergency messages as a text message please text the word ALERT to 22300. This is not a feature we automatically establish for families because some families have calling plans that charge for incoming texts.
Students are invited to enter the Healthy Lunch Challenge and possibly end up at the Kids’ State Dinner at the White House. Students aged 8-12 are invited to submit a healthy MyPlate-inspired recipe for a chance to win a trip to Washington to attend the Kids’ State Dinner at the White House. One child from each state and U.S. territory will be selected! Recipes must be submitted by April 4, 2016. Last year, New Hampshire’s winner was Ana of Manchester and you can see her winning recipe, Corn and Turkey Meatball Lentil Soup with Whole-Wheat Pita Chips, on the contest website. Winners will be announced in June and the dinner will be in July. Get all the details here: mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox/1532d806fd3d0f39. Any AEMS students who follow the MyPlate guidelines and enter the contest can also have their recipe/meal added to our monthly menu. We love new suggestions!
Can you spell trichinosis? tertiary? crescendo? recalcitrant? gestalt? These are but a few of the words that contestants were asked to spell last week at the NH State Spelling Bee. Brynne did a splendid job representing AEMS. Thank you Brynne!
Police Officer Joseph Guerrero is back again to work with our 5th graders through the DARE program. The D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) deals not only with drug issues but life skills as well. It does this by providing students with factual information on drugs, gangs and violence and the consequences of becoming involved in high-risk behaviors. D.A.R.E. teaches coping skills to resist the pressure to use drugs or to become involved in dangerous activities. D.A.R.E also establishes a positive relationship with a community-based police officer. The program will run for 10 weeks.
The 8th grade class continues to fundraise for their NYC trip. Tickets for the iPad raffle are available in the office or can be purchased from an 8th grade student. A BIG thank you to Kevin Goodwin for the free advertising in the Kearsarge Shopper week after week. You’ll notice we even have a color advertisement this week!
Pi Day is coming on March 14th. Interested students will participate in the Annual Pi Challenge when they memorize as many digits of Pi as possible. We have Pi tattoos and Pi pencils to mark the occasion!
Mark those calendars! Eighth grade graduation will be held on Thursday, June 9th.
Happy March!
