Get a Jump on Spring with Gardening Workshops

April 23 at Bachelder Library

Press release

Gardeners interested in getting ahead of the game and avoiding the impact of New Hampshire’s often wild weather swings are invited to join local farmer Diane Hersey at a workshop on Saturday, April 23, beginning at 10 AM, to learn about starting seeds successfully indoors, as well as cold frames, mini greenhouses, and sowing directly into the soil.

There will also be a presentation by Peter Zak of Highland Lake Apple Farm in East Andover on planting and caring for apple and other fruit trees and berries.

Sponsored by the Andover Institute, the session will be held at the Bachelder Library in East Andover, and the public is invited at no charge.

A life-long resident of New Hampshire, Diane is the owner of Down Home Organics and is in the process of moving to Andover. She draws on years of personal experience living and working on country farms in New Hampshire for her classes in rural living and organic gardening, all aimed at helping attendees “learn about the joys of country living through its arts.”

Peter is a long-time apple grower in East Andover, where he and his wife, Mary Lloyd-Evans, sell fresh fruit in season, as well as cider, jams, and jellies. His presentation will include information on choosing disease-resistant varieties and the safest methods of pest control and spraying.

The workshop is scheduled to be held in the basement of the library; if there are participants for whom the stairs would be difficult, contact the Institute at AndoverCommunity03216@nullgmail.com and we will arrange to hold it on the main floor.
