Science Pub Series Presents ‘A New Human Ancestor from the Cradle of Humankind’
Thursday, September 8, at 6 PM, Galligan’s Pub at Lethbridge Lodge
Adventures in Learning launches its monthly Science Pub series with “Homo Naledi: A New Human Ancestor from the Cradle of Humankind.” Dr. Jeremy DeSilva, associate professor of anthropology at Dartmouth College and a specialist in locomotion of early apes and human ancestors, discusses his work with lead investigators to identify a human ancestor with the discovery of more than 1,600 fossils in a South African cave.
Galligan’s Pub opens at 5:30 PM, with the presentation and discussion beginning at 6 PM. Food and beverage will be available for purchase. Reservations are required; call 526-3690. Free and open to the public.
11th Annual Dash & Stroll 5K Walk and Run
Saturday, September 10, beginning at 9:30 AM, on the Front Lawn
Join President Susan D. Stuebner in this opening week tradition that celebrates the relationship between Colby-Sawyer and our neighbors. New this year, President Stuebner invites participants to bring their leashed canine companions to join the fun. She’ll walk with her two Labradoodles and looks forward to meeting new friends, human and canine alike.
Registration for the non-competitive fun run and walk will take place on the college’s Front Lawn (rain location: Thornton Living Room in Colgate Hall) beginning at 9:30 AM. Japanese Drumming and Dance Workshop

Burlington Taiko presents an introductory workshop on the ancient Japanese musical art form of taiko. Featuring history, costumes, drum construction, acoustics and techniques, the workshop is limited to 35 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Since 1987, Burlington Taiko has mesmerized audiences with the powerful, spellbinding and propulsive sounds of the taiko drum, including a performance at the 100th running of the Boston Marathon, and annual appearances at Burlington’s First Night, the Joseph Campbell – Keepers of the Lore festival, and the Black Ships Festival in Newport, Rhode Island. Opening Reception for ‘Breaking the Mold: A Collaborative Exhibition with Tokyo University of the Arts’

“Breaking the Mold” features more than 50 works of contemporary ceramic art forms created by faculty and students of the Tokyo University of the Arts and Colby-Sawyer College, and guest works by faculty and students from Dartmouth College, New Hampshire Institute of Art and John Stark Regional High School.
Following the opening reception on Monday, September 19, at 5 PM, the exhibition remains open through Tuesday, November. 1. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM.
