Unity, NH-Sara “Sally” (Scudder) Allen, 79, died Friday, February 9, 2018 after a period of failing health.
She was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 7, 1938 the daughter of Henry J. and Margaret H. (Hail) Scudder, Jr.
Sally spent her early years in Brooklyn and lived in New London, NH from 1960-1980 when she moved to Springfield, NH. She started at the College of Wooster in Ohio and received her B.A. from Barnard in 1960, her M.Ed. in 1972 and her C.A.G.S. in 1978 both from UNH and her M.L.S. from Syracuse University in 1998. She worked at Colby Junior College as a Psychology Instructor and later ran the copy center at Colby-Sawyer College. Other positions she held over her career included Counselor with the Twin Rivers Mental Health Center in Franklin, Research Assistant at Dartmouth College, and Librarian in Grantham and Springfield.
While her children were young, she taught Sunday school, served as a den mother and a Brownie leader. She also taught kindergarten at the St. Andrews Episcopal church. Later in life, she continued her active community participation in Springfield, where she was a supervisor of the checklist and a strong supporter of the library. A lover of the outdoors, she also served as a Lake Host for the NH Lakes Association . She was in the bell choir at Kearsarge Community Presbyterian Church and sang in the Area Choir. Sally had been a Friend of Bill W for 37 years.
She is predeceased by a brother, Henry “Hank” Scudder III. She is survived by three children; Timothy and his wife, Wendy Thorpe Allen of Keene, NH, Diana Allen of New London, NH and Eric and his wife, Penney Allen of Andover, NH; five grandchildren, Keegan, Konrad, Bennett, John and Cyndi; two great grandchildren, Kaiden and Brayden; and a brother, Peter and his wife, Elizabeth Scudder of NJ.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
