The Wilmot Historical Society held a Special Meeting on April 15 at the WCA Red Barn in Wilmot. The purpose of the meeting was to ask the membership if they would support the idea of acquiring or leasing a property that would give the Historical Society sufficient space to properly display its collection.

Both Becky Rylander, President of the Sunapee Historical Society, and Jesse Schust, President of the Andover Historical Society provided information about the costs and responsibilities of owning and leasing properties.

The membership, in a majority vote, supported the following:

1) renting or purchasing a building and/or property to properly preserve, maintain, and display its collections

2) becoming a landlord should the Historical Society acquire land or a building that provides rental income

3) the Board’s cooperating with the Town Selectmen should they have appropriate space to share.

Several members weighed in with questions and suggestions.

The Board was asked to create a detailed description of the type of property they feel is needed and how they plan to finance it. This plan should be presented to the whole membership before going forward with any decisions on leasing or acquiring property.

Questions that need to be considered are:

1) What actions should the Board be authorized to take, independently of the whole membership, should a property become available.

2) Should representatives from the general membership be appointed to the building/acquisition committee?

The plan will be presented to the membership at the upcoming May 6 Program to be held at 2 PM. in the Wilmot Town Hall. All are invited to attend.
