Mary McIntyre Chapman, 101, passed away peacefully at the Laurels of Charlottesville on April 5, 2018. She was born on April 23, 1916, in Des Moines, Iowa, to the late Orrin F. and Bessie Farrens McIntyre and lived in that area much of her life. Mary graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa and attended Drake University. Following that time, she spent several years in Chicago, Illinois where she met her husband and was married in 1941. Both were employed by Montgomery Ward’s Department Store. Following the death of her husband, who was killed in the Philippines during World War II, she returned to Des Moines where she raised her son; she later served as administrative assistant to the County Assessor until her retirement in 1979. She enjoyed spending time with friends, reading and knitting. Mary moved to Charlottesville, VA., in 2010, where she lived until her death. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Robert B. Chapman; son, Robert B. Chapman, Jr.; and one brother Orrin F. McIntyre, Jr. and his wife Dee. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Lori Chapman of Charlottesville, Virginia. Also surviving are two nieces and one nephew; Molly Azzaline and her husband, Paul of Crystal Lake, Illinois, Orrin F. McIntyre, III and his wife, Charlotte of Little Rock, Arkansas and Susan Rochon and her husband George of Andover, New Hampshire. A funeral mass was held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines on May 12. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, Iowa.
