Thanks for the “Reports from Concord”

By Steven Darling

I would like to thank our representative, Ken Wells, for continuing the tradition of providing reports on the status of budgets, legislation, and activities of our state legislature in Concord.   We are fortunate to have both a representative motivated to make the effort, and a local newspaper that provides a means of reaching the people he represents. This tradition of reporting carries on a service to the community during the past decade.

Also, I appreciate that his reporting goes into some depth about the background and impact of the legislation, budget, or proposal.  This is of great value in understanding the reasoning behind votes made in Concord. It is far too easy to jump to an early conclusion about the title or intent of a bill from our limited knowledge.  The reporting that I have seen thus far emphasizes the final local impact on us in this district. For example, a reduced state budget and taxes sounds very attractive to all voters, but the end result we have seen, time and again, is that less financial support comes from state government. We have seen far too often, increases in our local taxes resulting from state mandated requirements.  Any effort to help us to understand the reasoning behind our representative’s vote is much appreciated.
