The Town Green Was Deserted On the Fourth of July Due to Cancellations

By Beacon Staff
On the Fourth of July, the Andover Village Green, usually bustling with crowds of people enjoying vendor booths, a grandstand, and many activities, was deserted this year save for the sad and lonely figure of Andover’s Uncle Sam in the form of a larger-than-life cutout. The 2020 festivities were cancelled for safety reasons due to the ongoing pandemic.
There were, however, a few familiar events held around town, such as the Andover Service Club’s scholarship pie sale, impromptu mini-parades on Main Street and in East Andover, a respectful flag burning ceremony by the American Legion, and the Highland Lake boat parade.
The good news is that the Fourth of July Committee is already making big plans for the 2021 celebration. It is sure to be a humdinger after a year’s hiatus. Maybe next year the real Uncle Sam will make an appearance. Caption: Shelley Geoghegan. Photo: Charlie Darling
