By Charlie DarlingContractors for Eversource, which owns the large transmission lines that run from Franklin to Sunapee, have been working in Andover’s section of those lines since April. They are replacing the old wooden poles with weathering steel poles and installing communication wires alongside the power wires. The goal is to improve the reliability of the grid by updating the structures and by enabling communications between substations. As you can see from this photo, the crews have had to create access for very heavy machinery over very rugged terrain. In this location, they also had to do extensive drilling into bedrock to secure the new steel poles. Caption and photo: Charlie Darling
