The Democratic Party Still Prioritizes Helping All Citizens

By William Bardsley

My Aunt Hildur had to borrow two dollars to buy me a Christmas present in 1940.  She had worked all her life until a blood clot and leg amputation stopped her earlier that year. She lived with my family all the time in the 1930s I can remember.

Think about that: A constructive member of society at age 63 without a nickel to her name.

Think about how the Democrats sponsored and passed social security, unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation in the 1930s, and later Medicare with kicking and screaming opposition all the way from the Republicans. (They’re still kicking and screaming now, opposing Obamacare.)

Think how much deeper the 2008 recession would have been without the tens of millions of checks sent out under the above programs, stimulating the struggling economy and helping the struggling people — and the same can be said about this year.

Think about how many more impoverished Aunt Hildurs there would be today without these programs.

November 3, vote for the Democrats, still the party that gives priority to helping all citizens, not just the top one percent.
