SUSAN ABBOTT NORRIS (Suzy), a 56-year resident of Andover, died on January 2, 2024, after a brief but trying battle with cancer. Suzy was born in 1944 in Torrington, Connecticut, to Barbara (Nath) and Chester Brown. She grew up in Kent, Connecticut, and spent summers in Campton, New Hampshire, at her family home on Mad River.
Suzy attended The White Mountain School in Bethlehem, New Hampshire, graduating in 1959. She then went on to attain a Bachelor of Arts in Latin from the University of New Hampshire.
Suzy arrived in Andover in 1966, where she and her husband raised their son. During a distinguished 32-year teaching career at Proctor Academy, she taught Latin and English, with a focus on British and American Literature. Her mastery of language and lifelong commitment to studying the written word were ever present in her teaching and writing.
After retirement from Proctor, Suzy’s primary creative focus turned to the composition of poetry. Her writing was published in The Poets’ Touchstone, Northern Woodlands, Amoskeag, and The North American Review. Suzy’s dedication to The Andover Historical Society, her many cats, and a love of gardening also stood out among her many passions.
Suzy was predeceased by her father, Chester; mother, Barbara; brother, Jonathan; sister, Katharine; and sister Stephanie. Suzy is survived by her husband Tim Norris, New London; her son Matthew Norris (Kelly), Seattle; her grandson Tobin Norris, Seattle; her brother-in-law Christopher Norris (Kathleen), New London; her niece Gretchen Blake (Ian), Davis, California; her nephew Christopher Norris (Alisa), Glen Ridge, New Jersey; her niece Shanda Holm (Andrew), Leavenworth, Washington; and her nephew Joshua Norris (Sue), Andover, along with many cousins.
