A handrail has been installed 187 years after the Tucker Mountain School opened to provide education for the children of District # 9. Thanks to the expertise of Jay Aubertin of Wilmot, the new-old railing looks authentic for the period. He noted that farmers in the 19th century would have reused material found around the farm to make what was needed.
Jay forged the railing using an iron wagon wheel rim for the rail and a leaf spring for the bracket. The handrail is sturdy and will be appreciated by visitors for years to come.
The Andover Historical Society will hold an Open House at the Tucker Mountain School on Sunday, June 9, from 1 to 3 PM. The school is located two miles up Tucker Mountain Road from the Highland Lake Inn. There is no charge and refreshments will be served.
The society has a collection of period school books and other artifacts for visitors to see. For more information, call Donna Baker-Hartwell at 603 381-5586, or contact the Andover Historical Society at andoverhistory.org
