ANDOVER — In these politically divisive times, having a conversation can be difficult when you find that your neighbor, friend, or family member feels differently than you do about the issues of the day. What do you do when a hot-button issue threatens to end the conversation with someone you just ran into in the community or across the dining room table? The temptation to just change the subject may solve the immediate awkwardness, but it doesn’t help develop the relationship further or promote better understanding.
Join political psychologist Krisan Evenson at The Andover Community Hub, on Thursday, October 24, at 7 PM, for a semi-structured conversation on navigating conversations with seemingly polar-opposite people, without having to silence your own beliefs or give up on the relationship. She’ll offer three tools from her work in conflict resolution and comparative politics in the United States and abroad, most recently at Plymouth State University and on the board of New Hampshire Peace Action, that can be helpful in keeping conversation going even when parties disagree, so that something is learned by each, and no one feels disparaged or attacked.
Attendance is free, refreshments will be served, and all are welcome. The Hub is located at 157 Main Street in Andover. For further information, contact theandoverhub@nullgmail.com or leave a message at 603 735-5509.
