Last month, we challenged readers to test their knowledge against an eighth grade graduate of the 1860s. The exam is still available at TinyURL.com/1860-Exam.
In early 19th-century America, many British measurements were still being used. Questions #9 and #10 in the arithmetic section of the exam include furlongs, leagues, and farthings. Readers who attempt to take the exam will have to know what these measurements are.
East Andover resident Mary Lloyd-Evans has taught math for many years and grew up in England. She recently gave me a quick lesson. The following is what I learned.
1 furlong (fur) = 40 rods (Furlongs are still used in horse racing)
8 furlongs = one mile (m)
3 miles = one league (L)
1 British pound (£) = 20 shillings (s)
1 shilling = 12 pennies (d)
1 penny = 4 farthings (far)
Readers may mail their finished copy of the exam to Mary at Attn: 1860 Exam, PO Box 88, East Andover 03231 for correcting. The “teacher” asks that you show your work!
The Tucker Mountain School House will be open from 1 to 3 PM on Sunday, September 8. Answers to the exam questions will be available to visitors. Cookies and apple cider will be served. Free and open to all!
