Hazel I. (Holt) Brown, 91, of New London, died Friday, January 31, 2014 at The Clough Center in New London. Hazel was born in Andover on November 27, 1922, the daughter of Jesse M. and Iva H. (Braley) Holt. She graduated from Concord High School in 1940. She worked for Fitch Murray Drugstore in Concord as a waitress for several years and also at the Poly Susan Bakery in Concord for about 10 years. Hazel worked as a waitress in the dining room at Colby-Sawyer College.
She lived in Hartford, Connecticut for 23 years and while there had been a technician at the Institute for Living, retiring in 1987. After her retirement, she moved to New London and worked at the First Baptist Church in the office for several years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of New London and was a member and the first desk volunteer for the Kearsarge Area Council on Aging. Hazel volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She used to like to crochet and decorate cakes.
She married Robert Brown in 1955, and he died in 1991.
Members of her family surviving include a niece, Isabelle Terk of East Middlebury, Vermont and two nephews, James Holt of Reva, Virginia and Timothy Holt of Troy, New York; many grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, and great-grandnephews; and many close friends.
A celebration of Hazel’s life will be held on Wednesday, February 5, at 1 PM at the First Baptist Church of New London with the Reverend Charles Glidewell, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Proctor Cemetery, Andover, in the spring.
